Coastal Pods Wynyard Gets ready for its first Summer:
A unique take on coastal accommodation in Wynyard Tasmania Australia.

A unique spin on coastal accommodation has arrived in Australia and is getting ready for its first summer. Recently opened, and situated in Tasmania’s North West coast, Coastal Pods Wynyard was developed by owners Justin McErlain and Cyndia Hilliger, upcycling redundant shipping containers to create a unique accommodation experience. Sourced from a shipping container graveyard in Melbourne, two 40 foot high cube containers form the basic structure of each of the 2 bedroom self-contained units.
“The project has its genesis in Christchurch, where we visited a few years ago after the earthquakes to see some incredible uses for shipping containers. The thought came to us, that we could utilise something similar to create a unique accommodation experience for visitors to the North West Coast Region.”
The development has a strong theme of upcycling and we wanted to preserve as much of the character and integrity of the shipping containers as possible, without sacrificing quality accommodation and functionality. We kept the original floors for example, with all their nicks and scratches so you get a real sense of the many journeys and destinations the cargo in these units must have had. We have kept the original front doors as functional elements of the design, so you can swing these open on a beautiful day and really soak in the atmosphere. We have repurposed and reused old to create new, to showcase how the old and unloved can be repurposed into something really interesting. We have kept the original façade and decals, so from the outside, it looks like what is it is – a shipping container.
“We anticipate a strong demand for the product, as more and more people are wanting to cater for themselves, and have enough room to move in their accommodation to enjoy the region for longer. It also has strong appeals to those people who just want to relax by the water and read a good book. These units are fully self-contained, so they provide a great opportunity for people to stay longer in the region, and cook their own produce bounties acquired form the local farmers markets. “
The second coastal pod has also been designed to accommodate travellers with disabilities.
“We wanted to focus on offering equal access accommodation, so that no matter who was travelling, no matter what their access needs, they too could enjoy the experience of staying in a shipping container right near the water. Specifically, we wanted to offer accommodation that didn’t look like a hospital suite. Wynyard is set up well for people with mobility challenges, however accommodation that is suitable for travellers with disabilities is a bit light on the ground, and can be a bit unreliable. We also do a lot of work with the Wynyard Yacht club, which has a fantastic ability sailing program. We thought there was a great opportunity to offer not only unique, accessible accommodation, but also to tie it in with what the Wynyard yacht club are doing with their ability sailing program.”
Each architecturally designed pod is self-contained and enjoys prime position overlooking the local river and wharf precinct. From the north facing deck, you can enjoy the ambience of the wharf precinct, observing the locals at work and play. The soaring central atrium frames the enormous nearby gum trees, providing a sublime vignette of native Australian flora. Each Coastal pod has a beach/ industrial ambience that is articulated throughout the interiors. There are two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a book nook for cosy book reading in the morning sunshine.
